We see things from the perspective of an 11-year old girl who is in turmoil and struggling for words. When her bourgeois family sits down for dinner, she finally manages to make herself understood.
The movie gives insight into the perspective and actions of an 11-year old girl, who is being sexually abused: it is a fight for words. The experiences of the girl are transmitted by means of atmospheric imagery and metaphors within the movie. The faces of the parents are never seen in the entire storyline. The girl lives in a terrifying, haunting world: ants come into her bed at night. But at times the girl manages to flee the oppressive circumstances – she creates moments of escape, secretly smokes in the shower.
As the bourgeois family is eating dinner, the girl manages to do that toward which the movie builds up to: she communicates to the mother that the father is abusing her. Whether her attempt to end the abuse is successful, is left open.
